This veterinary course in internal medicine of small animals is part of a series and is now open to participants that have completed course one and / or course two.

This internal medicine course is designed for veterinarians who wish to broaden their knowledge in internal medicine of companion animals. By attending the three courses listed below, they can expect to acquire post-academic training in the majority of `disciplines` of internal medicine. Some subjects for which a special course is organized will be discussed in short sessions, the other subjects will be discussed more extensively.
The intensive training will be at an advanced level with major emphasis on case-oriented and problem solving approaches.
The aim of the course is to give participants a sufficient level of competence in internal medicine to solve most of the problems in daily practice and to facilitate their collaboration with specialists in referral clinics.
The complete study program consists of three periods of two weeks (10 days each), during which lectures, demonstrations, case presentations and laboratory studies will be presented. The periods of two weeks will be given during three successive years.

This course will be coordinated by the PAOD Utrecht.

Themes of all three courses in veterinary internal medicine:

  • Course I: Clinical pathology (Blood results, cytology, ECGs, Gastroenterology, Hepatology) - small animals
  • Course II: Cardiology (introduction), Pulmonology, Endocrinology, Nephrology - small animals
  • Course III: Neurology (introduction), Oncology, Haematology, Intensive care/emergency medicine, Immunology - small animals

  • Endocrinology
  • Nephrology
  • Urology
  • Hematology
  • Nutrition
  • Cardiology
  • Feline Medicine
  • Pulmonology

The Internal Medicine course part III has very interesting topics this year. Michael Day is coming to talk on Immune mediated diseases for two days. It will be the first time in your life that you will really be able to understand immunology and see the relevance of it for the clinics. In addition, we have two days on Critical care (by Chiara Valtolina, Joris Robben and Joost Uilendreef), including a practical afternoon at the university clinic. One and a half day of Neurology based on cases by Quirinne Stassen and Lisette Overduin (a very practical approach!), sessions on abdominal ultrasound by Susanne Baroffka, on endocrinology by Hans Kooistra, and of course two days of oncology (the highlight of the course).
